Mandelbrodt with Chocolate Chips

Recipe in memory of Helen Lipp

Recipe contribution from Sandy Epstein

Helen Lipp, my Mom, loved this recipe. She always made me feel like I was the best baker every time I made the cookies. She loved to break a bite off the cookies to make them last longer and seem like she didn't eat as many!!! I worked so hard NOT TO BREAK THEM while I was making them! I miss her and definitely don't make them as often.

Holiday Soft Cake-Like Chocolate Drop Cookies

Recipe in memory of Martha Cohen Cherniss

Recipe contribution from LetaRae Cherniss

Anyone who knew my mother will remember what a wonderful cook and an exceptional baker she was. Mother loved cooking and baking especially during the holidays. When she gave you a recipe she would say, "follow it to a T, don't try to save time or cut corners". The two cookies chosen for this book were favorites of hers that date back to the 1960's. Hopefully you will enjoy them as much as her. Family and friends did.

Mom’s Kugel

Recipe in memory of Libby Sach

Recipe contribution from Susie Silverman

This is my mother Libby Sachs’ recipe and I have the original written in her handwriting. Just as my mother would serve this kugel for “Break the Fast” so do I. The torch was passed a couple of years ago after I had surgery and our daughter Ann made the kugel. It tasted spectacular and my mother would have “kvelled”.

Praline Cookies

Recipe in memory of Lorraine Silverman

Recipe contribution from Susie Silverman

This recipe is one that my mother-in-law Lorraine Silverman use to make and, once again, I have it in my personal cook book in her handwriting on a piece of notebook paper. We ate these cookies often at her house but I have yet to make them! Lorraine rarely used a recipe for anything that she made. If we liked something that she made, we probably wouldn’t get the exact same thing the next time as she would always be improvising. However, with desserts, she would always follow a recipe. This recipe actually says “oleo” for margarine so you can imagine how far back it goes.

Chocolate Chip Brittle

Recipe In Memory of Judie Weil
Submitted by Sheryn Joffe

My husband I met Judie and he husband Bob, at an insurance convention in Canada. We became good friends instantly. We saw them in their hometown of Minneapolis as well as Scottsdale where they had a second home. She was extremely involved in the "arts" in Minneapolis & co-edited several fund-raising cookbooks. She was an amazing cook.

Butter Railroad Cookies

Recipe contributed in honor of Sarah Rubin

by Molline Cassman

My mother, Sarah Rubin, baked these cookies for every family gathering. The cookie press made lines on the cookies so my sister, brother and I called them railroad cookies.  I still bake the cookies using Mom's old cookie press and plan to pass it on to my daughter, Amy Friedman. The taste and smell always reminds me of youth, love and family.

Rocky Road Brownies

Recipe contributed in honor of Lucille "Gammy" Bonner

by Judy Farber

My Mom made these for all of our family gatherings.  She loved her extended family and everyone loved "Gammy's" Brownies!

Cinnamon Coffee Cake

Recipe contributed in honor of Mary Arkovich

by Maxine Noodell

My Aunt Mary was always close to us.  She was my mother's sister and always there even after my own mother died.  I spent many of my growing up days at her house.  As a newlywed I made this cake frequently. This was one of her favorite recipes.

Cheesecake

Recipe contributed in honor of Libby Lewis

by Maxine Noodell

Libby Lewis was my husband's cousin and we had a very close relationship. She was my cooking and baking mentor when I was a young wife.  I made this cheesecake for a family gathering at Chanukah and it turned out to be a great success as people were unsure if a young wife's attempt would be successful.

Strudel

Recipe contributed in honor of Ida Sacks, by Shayna Sacks

All I can say is that the woman was the best cook I have ever known. Shabbat dinners at her house every week. Baking and cooking constantly for us, and for others. I can say I honestly don't remember her not being in a kitchen somewhere. She had a full kitchen with an additional full kitchen in the basement. Not to mention the countless hours she spent with the Beth Israel Sisterhood. Although I didn't realize it at the time, I was truly her princess, and I now realize that she was the queen of my world. I just wish I would have realized that before she left this earth. Not a day goes by that I don't think of her, knowing she is with me every step of the way. I can only somehow hope that these recipes serve as her legacy to all Jewish kitchens everywhere. She was truly a gift to all who knew her!  I love you Bubbie, Your Shayna "madel"
