This weekend Temple Israel is celebrating Jewish summer camp and its importance in the lives of Jewish children. The Friday night service will be “camp style,” filled with songs and music; Saturday night is a special camp alumni Havdalah service at Rabbi Brown’s home; and Sunday will feature representatives from various Jewish summer camps on hand to talk to children and their parents about their particular camp.

“We know that Jewish camping has a life changing impact on our kids and is the best tool to help us reach our goals in our religious school,” Rabbi Josh Brown said. “We hope this camp fair will be the beginning of a great increase in our kids joining their Jewish friends at camp this summer.”

Camps that will be represented include OSRUI, Herzl, Sabra, Shwayder and the JCC day camp.

Temple Israel is also holding a lottery for three $1,000 scholarships to help children attend the camp of their choice. Kids can sign up for the lottery Friday evening and names will be chosen on Sunday.

Financial assistance is also available through Temple Israel and the Omaha Federation’s Center for Jewish Life. Contact Temple Israel Executive Director Dennis DePorte or CJL Program Coordinator Mary Sue Grossman for more information.
