Rabbi Azriel is greeted by an excited student Sunday morning.
This past Sunday saw parents and their tired children crawl out of bed much earlier than they had gotten used to over the summer and make their way to Temple Israel for the first day of Religious School, where Rabbis Azriel and Brown, and Board President Sally Kaplan greeted students and their parents with warm wishes and Hershey Hugs.

Once inside, parents and children were greeted by OTGY Advisor Amy Katz and President Hannah Perry, who were on hand with a bake sale to raise funds for the youth group.
Parents were able to register their children for school if they hadn’t already done so and sign up to volunteer for various school functions.
After a period of schmoozing in the lobby, families were asked to make their way into the sanctuary where Rabbis Azriel and Brown led a morning prayer service as a kind of wake-up call for the students. Songs were sang, blessings were given, and Principal Ariella Lowensohn gathered together the faculty to lead their students to their classrooms.

Parents were invited to sit in on the first part of class, to get to known their childrens’ teachers and vice versa, after which Rabbi Brown hosted a parents’ meeting, where he discussed the new curriculum he and the various committee members came up with over the summer.

The morning was capped off with a school-wide barbeque lunch.
All in all, the first day of Religious School was a tremendous success, as illustrated below by Ariella.
