Summer is winding down and school is right around the corner, but one of Omaha’s Jewish youth groups isn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet. OTYG is hosting a pool party/membership drive on August 24 and it’s open to all kids in grades 9-12.
It’s an opportunity for the kids to hang out and swap stories about their summer activities, said OTYG Youth Advisor Amy Katz.
The evening begins at 7:30 at Amy Katz’s house, 9120 Woolworth Avenue, and from there the group will head to Sunset Hills Pool, 9601 Walnut Street, where parents can pick up their kids at 11:30.
Katz recommends those who are planning to attend should RSVP by contacting either herself or OTYG Vice President of Membership Abby Hack, who is excited about her first year as a member of OTYG.
“I’ve always wanted to be a part of OTYG,” said Abby, an incoming freshman at Westside High School whose older sister Grace was also a member.
Abby, 13, is hoping for a good turnout at the pool party. As part of her job as VP of Membership, she wants to “get people interested and involved” in OTYG.
“OTYG is a great way to get involved with Temple,” Abby said. “All of our events are really fun and everyone always has a really good time and it’s a nice way to meet Jewish people from your temple and other temples. I think it’s a great way to spend your time and help out.”
OTYG is part of NFTY, the North American Federation of Temple Youth, and allows teens to expand their youth group experience with their peers from across the country.
In addition to hosting this pool party, OTYG has many other events scheduled throughout the year, including bake sales and movie nights. And this year, Omaha will be hosting the NFTY conclave in November.
Those who plan on attending the August 24 pool party should remember to bring along their OTYG membership form. Those who do will receive a new duffel bag with the OTYG logo emblazoned on the side.
