As Congress convenes for some of the last few days before the end of the year, all eyes are on the fiscal showdown. As Jews, we know that any deal that reduces the deficit must not at the same time increase poverty. Tomorrow, we are asking you to join the RAC along with organizations across the country to send this message loud and clear to our lawmakers: Any path to deficit reduction must not destroy the safety net of programs serving the most vulnerable.
Pick up the phone tomorrow, Wednesday, November 28, and join anti-poverty advocates across the nation. Call 1-888-743-1097 (toll-free number provided by AFSCME). Ask to speak to your Senators and House Member and convey this message:
My name is [YOUR NAME] and I live in [YOUR HOME CITY]. I am calling today to urge [MEMBER’S NAME] to protect anti-poverty programs in any deficit reduction deal. Especially during the economic downturn, Americans who rely on the safety net to help them will be particularly vulnerable. We cannot rebuild our economy by slashing programs like SNAP (food stamps), Social Security, Unemployment Insurance, Medicaid, Medicare and the Affordable Care Act. When considering paths to deficit reduction, I strongly urge [MEMBER’S NAME] to avoid further cuts to these vital programs.
That’s it! Your 6 minutes can make a difference in lives of the 46.2 million Americans living in poverty and the millions more who would be affected by cuts to these programs. As Jews, we are inspired by the commandment to care for those in need in our communities (Deut. 15:7-11). Tomorrow, transform the words of Torah into action—call your Members of Congress and urge them to protect the most vulnerable.
Don’t know who your Members of Congress are? You can find out here.
